ISO 9001 or IATF 16949? Which Should an Automotive Supplier Get?
Both are quality management system standards, but they are not the same thing. IATF 16949 is an automotive-specific standard built on top of ISO 9001. The differences, who needs which, and what to know about the transition.
ISO 9001 and IATF 16949 are often confused, or people assume "if you have one you don't need the other." The reality: IATF 16949 is an automotive-specific standard built on top of ISO 9001. One is not an alternative to the other; IATF incorporates ISO 9001 and adds the extra requirements of the automotive sector.
What is ISO 9001?
A general quality management system standard — for companies in any sector. It aims to make processes repeatable, traceable and continually improvable. (For detail: Who gets ISO 9001 and why?)
What is IATF 16949?
A quality management system specific to the automotive production chain. It covers all the requirements of ISO 9001 and adds the essentials of automotive:
- APQP — Advanced Product Quality Planning
- PPAP — Production Part Approval Process
- FMEA — Failure Mode and Effects Analysis
- SPC — Statistical Process Control
- MSA — Measurement Systems Analysis
- Customer-Specific Requirements (CSR) — the OEMs' own additional requirements
For this reason IATF 16949 is noticeably broader and stricter than ISO 9001.
Quick comparison
| ISO 9001 | IATF 16949 | |
|---|---|---|
| Scope | All sectors | Automotive supply chain only |
| Basis | Standalone standard | ISO 9001 + automotive requirements |
| Typical tools | General QMS | APQP, PPAP, FMEA, SPC, MSA, CSR |
| Obligation | Usually a customer preference | Often mandatory for OEMs |
| Rigour | Baseline | High |
Which should you get?
- If you are outside automotive or a general supplier rather than an automotive sub-industry → ISO 9001 is sufficient and the right choice.
- If you supply parts/services to an automotive OEM or its supply chain → your customer will most likely require IATF 16949. Without it you cannot join the approved supplier list.
Important note: holding IATF 16949 means you also meet the requirements of ISO 9001 — you do not need both separately.
One difference to know about certification
ISO 9001 certification is obtained from an accredited certification body. IATF 16949, however, is issued by certification bodies that are specifically recognised by the IATF (IATF-recognized), under the IATF's own oversight rules — a separate and more restricted scheme.
